1st Ave No.2, DP's, Dodgems, Lillettes, Piranhas Mk 2
punkdaddy writes: Following last month's free download of 1st Avenue fanzine issue No.1, we can now serve up issue No.2. Thanks are due once again to Jonny of the Lubes for the loan of these and for more fanzines to come in the future. 1st Avenue No.2 features local bands the Dandies and Better Looking, plus an interview with Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) and reviews of Tom Robinson Band, Nils Lofgren and Ufo.
Also found more photos and cuttings from the DP's, the Dodgems and Lillettes. Plus some rare photos of the Piranhas (Mk2). In this incarnation, only Bob Grover survives from the original outfit. This line-up, formed around 1981, featured Geoff Ansell on drums, Mike Lance (bongos), Gary Turner (bass), Dominic Dring (sax), Colin Spicer (keys) and the man himself, good old boring Bob on vocals and guitar.
With producer Pete Waterman at the helm, these new Piranhas continued in the musical vein of Tom Hark, with a kwela-type treatment of the old standard Zambesi, which actually made the Top 10. Just as they were about to release a follow-up single, Zombie Jamboree, Waterman dropped the band in favour of Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Well he would, wouldn't he? Never trust a barrow-boy made good, still looking for the next big thing. I once saw Waterman on telly, explaining how he invented Two-Tone. Absolute bollocks Pete. Up yours!
